Knight of Darkness

by Kinley MacGregor (pseudonym of Sherrilyn Kenyon)

‘Lords of Avalon’ series Book #2

For countless centuries, I’ve been the assassin for the infamous Merlin, even though the woman who birthed me sits at the right hand of our enemy, Morgen le Fey. Now both omy mother and Morgen have decided that it’s time I take my place on their side of this conflict.

Normally, telling them no wouldn’t be a problem, except for the fact that the good guys I protect think that I’m an even worse demon than the ones we fight. Hmm, maybe they’re right. I have to say that I do enjoy maiming anyone who gets in my way.

At least until my mother gives me a simple choice: join Morgen’s Circle of the Damned or see an innocent woman die. I’m all for saving the innocent, but Merewyn isn’t as innocent as she seems. And she’s none too fond of the fact that her fate is in my dubious hands. Personally I’m all for taking the easy way out, but leaving her to Morgen is rough, even for me. Now the only way to save both ourlives is to face the evilest forces ever known – my mother and Morgen. And two people who know nothing of trust must learn to rely on each other or die: provided we don’t kill each other first.

Review: Finished Saturday, November 18th, 2006. Absolutely loved it! To quote again: Unputdownable! In the first chapter, I was instantly hooked, and I had a damn hard time trying to put this book down! The characters have distinct personalities, especially Varian, and I loved the banter between characters. I loved his ‘take shit from no one’ attitude, it suited him well. And the way he instigates… this book makes you laugh while holding your breath to see what happens next. And darn it, after checking out her website, I didn’t realize that she’d put an anthology in between Sword of Darkness and Knight of Darkness, titled Elemental. Looks like I’m hunting for another book! To the gang at Coles, see you Friday! LOL! As much as I’ve loved Angela Knight’s version of Avalon and Camelot, I adore Kinley’s just as much! This is definitely an awesome series!

Swords of Avalon

by Kinley MacGregor (pseudonym of Sherrilyn Kenyon)

‘Lords of Avalon’ series Book #1

The new king of Camelot wears no shining armor: Arthur and his knights have fallen and a new king rules.

In the darkest forest…

A scared, forsaken youth has become the most powerful – and feared – man in the world. Ruthless and unrestrained, Kerrigan has long ceased to be human.

In the heart of London…

A spririted peasant mired in drudgery, Seren dreams of becoming her own woman, but never expects that by fleeing her fate, she will meet her destiny.

Their worlds are forever changed…

Kerrigan’s goal is simple: barter or kill Seren to claim Arthur’s Round Table. Yet she is the one person who holds no fear of him. More than that, her nobility sparks something foreign inside him. In his nether realm, kindness is weakness and a king who harbors any sort of compassion loses his throne.

Four countless centuries, Kerrigan has lived alone in the shadows. Now Seren’s courage has forced him into the light that will bring either salvation to both of them … or death.

Review: June 6th, 2006. I agree, Trina, that she did spend a lot of time on background info, but I believed it was necessary. I don’t think the second book, which will be out in November 2006, will have much, considering how much Sword of Darkness gave us about the past. She might recap, but not full out.

I adore Sherrilyn, love her writing style. She creates colourful characters that you love to love and love to hate. As any of the best authors that I love, she makes me laugh, cry, and get right down pissed, and I adore her for that.

LOL, what I found funny was the quote on the cover of the book. She explains that she had said it to her editor as a joke, and since the editor thought it was a brilliant idea, they put her quote on the cover. LMAO, I burst out laughing when I read it.

I adore every single one of Sherrilyn’s books, whether she writes as Sherrilyn or Kinley, and I can’t wait for the next installment of Lords of Avalon.

(My fave part is in the ending ~ the mischief Kerrigan causes Agravain. LOL, I loved it!)

Bad Attitude

by Sherrilyn Kenyon

first full-length ‘B.A.D.’ series novel

BAD agent Sydney Westbrook must find the perfect sniper for a risky counter-terrorism mission. J.D. Steele, a military sniper whose attitude problem landed him in prison, seems a good candidate. But as they’re dragged into a secret world of freelance killers, Sydney begins to discover the man of honor and passion beneath Steele’s arrogant facade. It’s a man even Steele didn’t know he could be – and a man whose mission will risk the life of the only woman he’s ever loved…

Review: HOT, HOT, HOT! God, there’s no other way to explain Kenyon’s characters, writing style… She’s a great author with an awesome imagination. The characters are colorful, individual personailities with their own sets of priorities and their own sense of right and wrong. Character and location descriptions are so vivid you can close your eyes and picture it perfectly. (What I wouldn’t do to get my hands on Steele, mmmm-hmmmm!) Kenyon knows how to give the book the right amount of power to create an awesome punch, and that woman knows, hands-down, how to write a sex scene that can make you hot under the collar and wish you can just jump right in. Do I recommend this book? HELL, YES!

Dark Side of the Moon

by Sherrilyn Kenyon

‘Dark-Hunter’ series Book #14

Susan Michaels was once the hottest reporter on the Beltway Beat until a major scandal ruined her life and left her writing stories about alien babies and Elvis sightings. Life as she once knew it was over, or so she thinks, but then she gest a lead on a story that could salvage her extinct career. She heads to the local animal shelter, expecting a hot news tip, which she gets in the form of a major police cover-up … for a ring of soul-sucking vampires out to take over Seattle. So much for saving her credibility.

And if that isn’t bad enough, she gets talked into adopting a cat and finds she’s allergic to it. A cat that turns out to be a shapeshifter who claims to be an immortal vampire slayer on the prowl for the same corrupt cops. Her first thought: seek professional help.

But as Susan’s drawn into Ravyn’s dark and dangerous world, she comes to realize that there’s a lot more at stake than just her defunct career. Now it’s no longer a question of bringing the truth to her readers; it’s a matter of saving their very lives and souls.

Ravyn’s life was shattered over four hundred years ago, when he mistakenly trusted the wrong human with the truth of his existence. He lost his family, his honor, and his life. Now, in order to save the people of Seattle, he’s forced to confront that nightmare all over again, and to trust another woman with the secret that could destroy him.

In the world of the Dark-Hunters, life is always dangerous. But never more so than now; when a very human woman can shatter their entire world with just one story. The only question is … will she?

Review: Finished Saturday, June 10th, 2006. You all know that I don’t pick up hardcover books … but I just could not help myself with this one. It was a year after the last book came out, and the MMP wouldn’t have come out for another six months… I COULDN’T WAIT THAT LONG!!! Again, another awesome book by Sherri. I can’t get enough of this series… Better than watching a movie on TV!!! I don’t know how she does it, but the characters seem so real, and the events seem so real, that it just sucks you right in. It’s impossible not to lose yourself inside the story; like being on the outside looking in. Her characters all have distinct personalities of their own, love scenes that make you hot under the collar, and if you’ve been reading this series from the beginning, you’ll understand the animosity between the good and the bad. Following the series, some questions were answered, only to pull out more questions, and speculations, and wondering… Man, Sherri did it again, and I can only hope and pray that this seires will be around for a long time.

The Dream Hunter

by Sherrilyn Kenyon

‘Dream-Hunter’ series Book #1

(‘Dark-Hunter’ series Book #18)

In the ethereal world of dreams, there are champions who fight to protect the dreamer and there are demons who pry on them…

Arik is such a predator. Condemned by the gods to live eternity without emotions, Arik can only feel when he’s in the dreams of others. For thousands of years, he’s drifted through the human unconscious, searching for sensation. Now he’s finally found a dreamer whose vivd mind can fill his emptiness.

Dr. Megeara Kafieri watched her father ruin himself and his reputation as he searched to prove Atlantis was real. Her deathbed promise to him to salvage his reputation has now brougth her to Greece where she intends to prove once and for all that the fabled island is right where her father said it was. But frustration and bad luck dog her every step. Especially the day they find a stranger floating in the sea. His is a face she’s seen many times … in her dreams.

What she doesn’t know is that Arik holds more than the ancient secrets that can help her find the mythical isle of Atlantis. He has made a pact with the god Hades: In exchange for two weeks as a mortal man, he must return to Olympus with a human soul. Megeara’s soul.

With a secret society out to ruin her expedition, and mysterious accidents that keep threatening her life, Megeara refuses to quit. She knows she’s getting closer to Atlantis and as she does, she stumbles onto the truth of what Arik really is.

For Arik, his quest is no longer simple. No human can know of a Dream-Hunter’s existence. His dream of being mortal has quickly turned into his own nightmare and the only way to save himself will be to sacrifice the very thing he wanted to be human for. The only question is, will he?

Review: Finished February 11th, 2007. ‘UNPUTDOWNABLE!’ As simple as that. Kenyon did it to me once again. Although the novel is fantasy, her characters are very real and believably true to life; thoughts, feelings, actions, words… The way she describes the surroundings, whether on earth in Greece, above the clouds on Olympus, down below when you meet Hades, you’re there, in every aspect, every step of the way. And she did to me what she usually does; so many emotions for the reader to feel. Anger, frustration, heartbreak, hope, anticipation, love… She made me freakout pissed, she had me sobbing, she hand me holding my breath, praying that everything would be all right. I’m not sure, but I think this one may surpass her other novels. A definite recommendation! If you haven’t read any of the DH series, please, please, please … get started!

Review: Not completely disappointed, but it’s cutting it really close!

Okay, let me begin by saying I’m a huge fan of Sherrilyn Kenyon. I was first introduced to her Dark-Hunter series with Seize the Night, loved it, went back and got the rest of the series and have been following it ever since. Let me continue that by saying: although the story and plot was good, I was disappointed and found the book overpriced.

I paid $8.09 CND for OSN – I have an iRewards card through Chapters. I felt like I was cheated. I opened the book, saw the size of the font and though, WTH! If the font was the usual size, no way would the book be any bigger than maybe 200 pages. That is the size of a Harlequin romance, for crying out loud! A novella! Not impressed with that. Automatically it put me in a frame of mind that didn’t favour the book.

With that said, I’ll jump into it without giving too much away. Kenyon warned that this book is a bridge between the last and the next books. It most certainly is that, but I wasn’t thrilled.

Stryker is the bad guy – plain and simple. He has a happily-ever-after; while that’s not a completely good thing, it’s not a completely bad thing either. That’s not why I picked up OSN. Stryker is forced to take the souls of humans to stay alive: we already knew that. We may not be happy with it, but we understand it. But the whole ‘pitty me, Dad vowed to rape, torture and kill my pregnant wife while I watched so I better leave her to protect her’ BS was just that – a big butt-load of BS. That card shouldn’t have been played. Is it supposed to drag sympathy from the reader? Um, if Zephyra was a nicer person, perhaps, maybe. And that’s a big Maybe!

I hated Zephyra, with a capital ‘H’. The synopsis called her a shrew… oh, she’s much more than that, but unfortunately,  I need to watch my language; I’ve a few names to call her, but I have kids present. I understand why she’d hate Stryker. Should he have told her the entire truth behind why he was leaving her? YES! D’uh. She turned to Artemis, who gave shelter for her and her daughter, Medea. She did what she had to do to keep her daughter and herself alive. Do I commend that? What mother wouldn’t. However, the hell she lived through shouldn’t have been enough to turn her into the cruel b*tch that she now is. Stryker doesn’t do torture, but Zephyra seems to revel in it, especially towards Jared, a Sephiroth. Jared had been offered to Zephyra to keep her from killing a gallu demon. She took custody of him and killed the demon anyway, refusing to be anyone’s slave. She has control over Jared because of a collar previously placed on him, but what I don’t get is her continual torture directed at him. She’s just plain cruel. I can understand cruelty if there’s something behind it. In Jared’s case, from her, there is none. But his traitorous act that pretty much wiped out the rest of his kind is the reason why he’s wearing the collar, that he’s supposed to be tortured for all eternity because of that act, and that act plus the thousands of years of torture has him in the frame of mind that goes along with: I just want to die. If you ask me, that hand is being overplayed. Enough already! Medea seems to be the only one of two in that bunch that has a compassionate bone in her body. I’m curious to see what becomes of her. LOL, wouldn’t it seem fitting if she becomes Nick’s heroine? I liked Davyn, even though he’s one of Stryker’s commanders. While he needs to feed on the souls of humans to stay alive, he is Anglekos: he only steals the souls of evil humans, those who deserve to die; ei: rapists, pedophiles, murderers. The lowest of the low. And strangely enough, he reminds me of my brother, Davin, who may be a big teddy bear but who’d do anything to protect his family.

So, since Stryker doesn’t care if he lives or dies now that everyone he’s ever loved is dead, he does something really stupid so that he can finally get rid of Ash and Nick. And wouldn’t you know it – that act comes back to bite him in the ass. What’s surprising is how Stryker, Ash and Nick join forces to beat back the really, really bad guy, to save the world. And yet, Stryker and Ash, even though they respect each other, are still at an impasse; Stryker’s daimons need to feed on the souls of humans to stay alive, Ash and his Dark-Hunters are protecting human kind. But there’s a curve – daimons are now feeding off gallu demons – and can now walk in daylight. That has me curious to see what’s going to happen and I’ll be continuing the series. And Nick… He is now a Malachai, a supremely powerful creature. And until my curiosity is sated, I will always want to know if Nick and Ash can get passed what happened to Cherise, Nick’s mother.

Now that we have a few glimpses of what’s to come, I can close my review by saying that I am far from satisfied. I have never, in all the DH novels, given any of them lower than a 4 star. This one’s a solid 3, and that seems somehow generous, which is very, very, unlike me.

Review: No Way could this book have been better!

Boy, this answered every question I ever had about Ash. The man is a god, in every sense of the word. Now, I usually don’t buy hardcover, as a rule. I can’t afford it. But no way in hell was I waiting for paperback for this one. I think every Dark-Hunter fan out there waited too long as it is, LOL, myself included!

The more he was tortured, in any way possible, the more my heart broke. I sobbed through the first half of the book. My heart shattered every time he had to endure such onslaught. Every time my kids came out of the playroom, they saw me with red eyes, tears and a box of kleenex, no word of a lie. My daughter, 7, asked me why I read books that make me so sad. Oh, I can’t wait until she’s old enough to read this series.

And just the thought… If he hadn’t been through what he’d been through, he would not be the same Acheron we know and love. While we knew he was a God and know who his parents are, he is still unlike any God we’ve read. Selfishness runs thick in that bunch, but even as the God of Destruction, he is filled with compassion for everyone who are more or less defenseless. While it was humans who tortured him so thoroughly, still, he would protect right to the end. While I agree with some that it was a little much, I can understand why the book was written that way. I think, honestly, that if it hadn’t dragged on, we wouldn’t have understood Ash as well as we do now.

And I say he met his match in Tory. While continuing the hunt for Atlantis, swearing to prove her family weren’t just a bunch of crazies, she makes amazing discoveries, and it hurts Ash to have to discredit her, even though his actions are to protect the whole of the earth. Yet, he can’t forget her. He can’t see her future like he can most people, and it shakes him. He even turns to Savitar for advice, even though Sav isn’t supposed to tell him anything.

Tory and Ash are a truly perfect combo. While she had an inkling of what Ash may have suffered in his past, she finally understood why he is the way he is, even if it was horrifying to read, and her compassion and love for the man/God in front of her only grew.

Even scared, she is furious and fights back. No matter what she does, she does because of Ash. And I was truly hoping that Artemis would get the ass-whipping of her life. I just wish that she got more than what she got. But the series isn’t over – I can’t wait for her to finally get what’s coming to her. The more she treated Ash like a slave and nothing better, like something to be own, the more I yelled and cursed her, my fist balled tight while the other held the book. LOL, even my daughter told me to watch my mouth, LOL!

I think the best part of the book was when the gang showed up to back Ash, without question, just because he needed their help. While Ash thought he had ‘friends’, he truly didn’t know what he had until then. And if it hadn’t been for Tory being in his life, he still wouldn’t know it. No longer does he half to live his life alone.

Then the ending of the epilogue sent a shiver down my spine. My heart is aching for Nick, and I so hope – I pray – that he isn’t going into an alliance with Artemis. He is going to bite off more than he can chew, and I so hope that he and Ash will be able to team against her.

Review: Almost perfect!

So where do I begin? I adored Terri and Nathan, their passion for justice, their lines between right and wrong, including the grey areas. I think they balance each other perfectly.

Terri is stubborn, has a mind of her own, with something to prove, I think more for herself and anyone else. She pushes herself, even when she should be taking a break. She believes vehemently in right and wrong.

Nathan wants to find the person who killed his brother. While his is a sort of vigilante justice, something Terri abhors, he isn’t killing anyone. He’s saving that for the one person who actually pulled the trigger.

What I liked was the spice between them, the electicity spiked the second they were together, even when neither knew who or what the other was.

Lots of action and suspense, with a little romance mixed in. An excellent mix. The plot seemed a little far-fetched to me, but still doable, and the ending has an unresolved issure that has me wondering if it will be part of the next plot.

This is what I found different: While there is usually lots of interaction between all agents of the B.A.D., there was hardly any here. Very little laughs when usually there’s quite a bit. It was almost like the author didn’t really know the characters. And that has me wondering… There’s a co-author to this, something I haven’t seen Sherri do before, not on one of her own stories. And I wonder if it was the co-author who wrote most of it. While I really hate to admit that, because I adore the series, that’s the feel I’m getting. Not to say that’s a bad thing, don’t get me wrong. It just didn’t have the same feel as the other B.A.D. stories. I’ve never read, nor have I heard, of Dianna Love Snell, so I don’t know what her writing style is like, so I can’t fault her.

While I thoroughly enjoyed this, I can’t give it my usual 5-star rating. And that doesn’t sit well with me. This novel was well past a year overdue - I think it’s actually closer to two. The next novel is supposed to be Joe and Tee’s story and it should have been out by now. I know she’s really busy with her DH series (which I can’t get enough of), and her other series’ as well, and I’m hoping the next one doesn’t have a co-author. Joe and Tee deserve more of her attention. If not, I’m really scared that the B.A.D. series is going to suffer.

Review: Kenyon sure knows how to write ‘em!
Again, the characters are far from simple, and again manage to put their pasts behind them. But no matter how similar they are, they’re very different in the same way. She throws a plot mixed in with good guys you grow to care about, bad guys you’d love to pulverize, and a love so profound, you ache right along with the characters. She has a way with words that makes you feel what the characters feel, captures you right from the first sentence and refuses to let go until you finish the last word in the last chapter. Once again, I was swept away by the love between the main characters, angry right along with them, fought right along with them, and balled my head off. I dearly hope that Kenyon never stops writing. LOL, I’ll end up in withdrawal!
I also read the excerpt of Ash’s book. I won’t get into it, for fear I’ll say something that someone will get upset at me for because they haven’t read it yet and I don’t want to spoil it for them. Suffice to say that, when Ash’s book comes out, I’ll be the first in line right by the door before the store even opens! That’s a guaranty!

Consider this handbook your education. Hunter 101. And don’t go thinking you got off easy just because there’s not a pop quiz at the end. This is the good stuff. The real deal. In here you’ll find out all there is to know about being a Dark-Hunter. Now for the disclaimer: This book is mutable. It goes with the wind. It changes more often than the mind of a sixteen-year-old Gemini with a closet full of clothes and a date in an hour. Don’t be surprised if you open it up for the thirty-five thousandth time and find something old, something new, something borrowed or . . . well you get the point. Curl up in a comfy chair with some millennium-old scotch and feast upon the informative banquet I have prepared for your enjoyment. Welcome to your new life.

Awesome! Definitely Hunter 101. Everything we’ve learned is in here, plus a little more… just not enough. But that’s okay. I can wait patiently for the next novels to come out… well, sort of patiently.
The book touches base on everything from how DH’s came to be, about Apollites and Daimons, and Gods and Squires, everything! It helps put everything in the right place. Got confused? This book should help you sort it all out. My fave parts: Interviews with Sherri, Ash and Simi, Jones’s Diary made me laugh so hard I had tears, and the deleted scenes. Definitely worth reading!
