Whiskey Sour

by J.A. Konrath

“Jacqueline ‘Jack’ Daniels” series Book #1

Lieutenant Jacqueline “Jack” Daniels is an insomniac Chicago cop with a train wreck of a personal life and a stalker bent on adding her to his murder list. Join Jack, her binge-eating partner, a sleazy PI, and two very stupid FBI agents on a wild hunt for the Gingerbread Man – a killer who makes Hannibal Lector look like Huck Fin.

Whiskey Sour, the first in the Jack Daniels series, cleverly combines laugh-out-loud humor with edge-of-your-seat suspense. This is serial murder – with a twist.

Review: A laugh-out-loud, in-your-face mystery.

Jacqueline “Jack” Daniels, yes that’s her real name, you can check her ID, is a divorced, 40 something insomniac, who is good at her job. And that’s it, as far as she believes. At one point, she had it all: marriage to a great guy, a budding career… only, her ambitions took over. She became a great lieutenant detective in the Violent Crimes unit, and believes her marriage failed because of it. In her words, “it was all her fault.” Married to her career, she doesn’t have a personal life. Her latest boyfriend left a “Dear Jack” letter on her fridge, then left a message on her answering machine asking her to put his things in storage. Instead, she left them in the hall.

A new case pops up; a woman found dumped in a garbage can, um, rear-end facing upwards. Stapled to the victim, a note: “you cant catch ME IM THE GINGERBREAD MAN.” And it doesn’t end there. More bodies are found, and other than finding twine imbedded in the victims’ wrists and ankles, there are very little clues to go on. With pressure from the mayor, Jack her her partner Herb, are now stuck with two FBI agents who are sent to profile their madman, using the ViCAP computer. Only, their profile is off – way off. And nothing they get from the computer is worth a dime.

Meanwhile, tampered candy is left in her car, causing havoc and ending up with eleven stitches in Herb’s mouth. Clues have her questioning her ex-partner, and Herb convinces Jack to try Lunch Mates, a dating service. And her lucky first date ended up with a hell of a lot more than he bargained for.

**Laugh-out-loud funny is right. The deadpan jokes had me cracking up. I liked Jack. I liked her in-your-face personality, and you really get the feel for her. No buttered up and overdone descriptions, the entire story is to the point. You get her background quick and easy, and you kind of feel bad for her. Being married to her job, she believes she can’t have a personal life, yet we see her make a friend out of a criminal she’d arrested when she was still in uniform, and the new guy, who got more than he bargained for, has kept in touch, even from the hospital. I think there’s hope for her yet.

I liked her partner, pushing without being pushy. I see him as her polar opposite, yet they’re both just as determined to get the job done and see justice is served.

I liked the mystery. Even though you know who the murderer is, it was watching the good guys going after him that was really well done. Warning: at one point, it does get a little gory. But I’m a Stephen King fan, so that didn’t bother me in the least. And getting inside the killer’s mind – enough to give me a couple of shivers.

While the story is a little less than three hundred pages, you get all of what a good book is made of. I liked the fact that there wasn’t any filler – nothing that draws you away from the plot, even when hitting Jack’s personal life. Straight, to the point, and still, it involves the story. Terrific novel, and I plan on continuing the series.

Wraith

by Phaedra M. Weldon

‘Zoe Martinique’ series Book #1

First in an excitingly different and new paranormal series. Zo’ Martinique has turned her unusual ability into a career. When she’s traveling, she can’t be seen which makes her an ideal professional snoop. Industrial espionage, surveillance, whatever. But one night things get out of hand while she’s out-of-body. She witnesses a murder and discovers she has unwelcome company: Trench-Coat, a ghostly killer who can see her and hurt her.

Teaming up with a blue-eyed police detective, she tries to solve the case and improve her love life. She also enlists the support of her psychic mother and the ghostly couple who haunt her house. And with murderers, kidnappers, and a desperate ex-porn star involved, Zo’ needs all the help she can get.

Review: I finished this novel on Saturday, July 21st, 2007. An excellent first novel!

I really liked Zoe as a character. I loved her attitude, her personality, the way she sees things, feels emotions. Truly an original character.

The rest of the cast was great as well. Her mom, her ‘assistant’ her friends, and ‘her cute cop.’ Each and everyone an ‘original.’

I thought the plot was great, the twists perfectly placed. The action was smooth, the suspense enough to drive you crazy (good crazy,) and the ‘bad guys’ give you the shivers like you wouldn’t believe. If you like paranormal thrillers, this one is an awesome read! I can’t wait for the second book!

Crave the Night

by Susan Sizemore

‘Primes’ series Books #1, 2, & 3

(“I Burn for You,” “I Thirst for You,” “I Hunger for You”)

In her steamy vampire romances, acclaimed author Susan Sizemore pits vampires against mortals, destiny against desire… By popular demand, all three novels are now availiable in this paperback collectible.

I Burn for You

Battling the dark hollows of his soul, vampire Alec Reynard undergoes secret medical treatments that allow him to bear daylight. Living a double life as a bodyguard, he must also battle his powerful attraction to Domini Lancer, a mere mortal – and, unbelievably, his soul mate. When danger threatens, he kidnaps Domini to protect her but wonders: will she accept the darkness within him – or is she a vampire slayer who’s cleverly infiltrated his clan?

I Thirst for You

Josephine Elliot knows only that the stranger who appears out of the dark desert night and took her captive is named Marcus Cage and that he’s on the run. A vampire, Marcus is overwhelmed by his thirst for Josephine and instanly recognizes her as his soul mate – but when she unwittingly betrays him, both are thrust into mortal danger. Can their newfound love survive or is their insatiable desire doomed?

I Hunger for You

Mia Luchese, who comes from a long line of vampire hunters, doesn’t know that Colin Foxe broke off their blistering affair because he’s a vampire. After she’s attacked by evil vamps and Colin rescues her, their real identities must be revealed for them to get to the bottom of the attack. But even a generations-old enmity that should rip them apart cannot break the bond that has their souls hungering for an eternity of ecstasy in each other’s arms…

Review: Finished July 18th, 2006. Darn it, another series I’m hooked on, LMAO! Susan Sizemore is an awesome writer. Her plots have twists that you didn’t see coming (especially in I Hunger For You,) her characters are colourful, believable and funny. You can feel the ‘sizzle’ between heroes and heroines; her descriptions of characters and places create a vivid picture in your head. Each character had their own thought process, and I loved the ‘inner’ battles. The men were the proper heroes but turned to mush when it came to their women, and the women were fiercely independent, strong and brave … exactly what I ‘crave’ (excuse the pun) in a really good book. I can’t wait for the next installment of the series: Primal Heat, available on July 25th, 2006. Coles says they have 5 in stock… Hmm, wonder if Lorette can sell it to me earlier. I think I’m about to make quick phone call, LOL!

Magic Lost, Trouble Found

by Lisa Shearin

‘Raine Benares’ series Book #1

A girl with attitude. An all-powerful amulet.

This could only mean trouble.

My name is Raine Benares. I’m a seeker. The people who hire me are usually happy when I find things. But some things are better left unfound…

Raine is a sorceress of moderate powers, from an extended family of smugglers and thieves. With a mix of street smarts and magic spells, she can usually take care of herself. But when her friend Quentin, a hot-quite-reformed thief, steals an amulet from the home of a powerful necromancer, Raine finds herself wrapped up in more trouble than she cares for. She likes attention as much as the next girl, but having an army of militant goblins hunter her down is not her idea of a good time. The amulet they’re after holds limitless power, derived from an ancient, soul-stealing stone. And when Raine takes possession of the item, it takes possession of her.

Now her moderate powers are increasing beyond anything she could imagine – but is the resume enhancement worth her soul?

Review: I finished this novel on Sunday morning, July 8th, 2007. An excellent first novel to a new series!

I thought it was great! As a first book, you meet the characters – all of them. The ones to adore, the ones to hate… Raine is an excellent female character. Brave, strong, does what she has to despite how she feels about doing it. I can’t wait to see what she gets herself into next.

The secondary characters all tie in with her in some way, and I like the diversity of them, whether friend, family, or a really hot guy. And I can’t wait to read more about them!

I loved the setting. Shearin uses her imagination to the max, creating a whole new world with really great characters, good and bad. The good ones made you sigh, the bad ones gave you the creeps. And the surroundings are described so perfectly that you wouldn’t know this place doesn’t exist. The action is superb. The plot was beautifully orchestrated, making the novel damn near ‘unputdownable!’ Different in style, no complete romance but just a hint of, leaving you wanting more… *sigh!*

Can’t wait for Book #2, Armed and Magical!

A Quick Bite by Lynsay Sands (‘Argeneau’ series Book #1)

Avon

Format: Trade Paperback - Published: October 6, 2005 - 374 Pages - ISBN: 0060773758 - Published By: Avon

A Quick Bite

by Lynsay Sands

‘Argeneau’ series Book #1

“That hot guy ties to Lissianna Argeneau’s bed? He’s not dessert – he’s the main course!”

Lynsay Sands is bringing her hilarious voice and popular vampire series to Avon and we’ve got a new star on the rise!

A haemaphobic vampire?

You guessed it. And her mother wants nothing more than to cure this nasty fear of blood so her darling daughter can have a normal meal for once. What better way than to give her a darling doctor on a plate – or tied to a bed – for feeing? But instead of simply having a delicious snack, this vampire vixen decides the doctor is too tasty for just one bite, and before they know it he’s got a hot (but cold-blooded) woman on his hands who wants much more than to just sink her teeth into him…

Lynsay comes to us with an established track record. She may be new to Avon, but she brings with her an already-established series, the Argeneau vampire series, that has a strong steady fan base that’s clamoring for the next installment.

Vampire comedy is hot and on the way up and with Lynsay Sands we have one of the pioneers of the mini-genre, and the best of the best!

Review: Read in 2007. *giggle* I thought this was a great book!

I thought the vampire aspect, the way Sands wrote it, was definitely original. I’d never heard it explained like that and I thought it was a great twist.

The characters seemed real, especially the family part of it. LOL, I could see my dad’s side of the family doing just what the Argeneau family does.

I thought Lissi was a great character. Strong in her own right, she has a head on her shoulders, and I’m equally glad that she fell in love with ‘the doctor’ as much as he did with her. They match each other equally in brains and tastes.

And I won’t ruin it by giving any spoilers. But I do have a question to get you wondering… Does Lissi really get over her phobia? Read it to find out, LOL!

Fanged & Fabulous

by Michelle Rowen

‘Immortality Bites’ series Book #2

My name is Sarah Dearly, and I’ve got major problems. Last month, I was turned into a vampire by the world’s worst blind date. Then I may have, totally by accident, started a war between the mostly peaceful bloodsuckers and a bunch of sociopathic vamp hunters who have nicknamed me the Slayer of Slayers. Now I’m being used as bait to draw out the hunters’ bad-ass leader, while my gorgeous 600-year-old boyfriend Thierry seems to be blowing me off, and my sizzle-hot, fanged friend Quinn is trying to turn my self-defense lessons into make-out sessions. So you know what? I’m done. I’ve had it. There comes a time when a vamp has to just suck it up and go after what she wants. And as soon as I figure out what that is, that’s exactly what I’ll do…

Review: I finished this novel on Sunday, July 22nd, 2007. LOL, a great second book!

I laughed as much while reading this one as I did the first one. Most of the characters are the same as the first, with the exception of a few added ‘bad guys’. I thought the plot played out well.

Moments of action that were as funny as well as holding your breath, a few moments of tears, a few of anger, and one of ‘oh, how sweet’ and ‘aaaah’.

Can’t wait or the third book!

Bitten & Smitten

by Michelle Rowen

‘Immortality Bites’ series Book #1

There’s a new vamp in town…

Dear Mom,

I might be a wee bit late for Cousin Missy’s wedding. It’s been a tough week. Turns out, my blind date from hell was literally from hell. Guy bit me. Next thing I know, I’m being chanced all over the city by vampire hunters. And did I mention that I got fired, too?

Bright side – I met a man. Thierry de Bennicoeur. How great is that name? Anyway, he’s sexy, six-hundred years old, and a tad suicidal, but no one’s perfect, right? And we have a deal – he’s gonna show me the ropes of the vampire world, and I’m supposed to help him end his existence. Or maybe I’ll just try to convince him life is worth living – no small challenge with the mostly immortal, let me tell you. I’ll admit it’s a complicated relationship. But with any luck, I just might have a date for that wedding after all…

Hugs and Kisses,

Sarah

Review: I finished this novel on Tuesday, July 17th, 2007. As the first in a new series, I loved it!

It was funny, quirky. Sarah is a great character; I loved her sense of humor, and how she reacts to everything.

Thierry … *sigh* what I wouldn’t do to meet a man like that. Dark, mysterious, a vampire unlike those I’ve read before.

Quinn … I felt bad for him, but I’m glad he’s finally coming to grips with what’s what.

The entire cast had me laugh and groan with all their quirks. I can’t wait to read the next one, Fanged & Fabulous.

Date Me, Baby, One More Time

by Stephanie Rowe

‘Immortality Sexy’ series Book #1

IF YOU THINK LIFE IS COMPLICATED, TRY IMMORTALITY.

Justine Bennett is cursing her life. She’s the Guardian of the Goblet of Eternal Youth, she hasn’t left the house in ages, and it’s been over 200 years since she’s had sex. Oh, and the Goblet has shaped shifted into an espresso machine. Not exactly the stuff grand destiny is  made of…

Derek LaValle is worried. Due to a family curse, he’ll be dead in the space of a week unless he finds the Guardian of the Goblet of Eternal Youth and beheads her. Which wouldn’t be a problem if she wasn’t so sexy, smart … and ready to behead him right back.

Review: I finished this book on Monday, May 21st, 2007. As the first book in the series, I thought it was awesome.

The characters, I thought, are developed well, and all different from each other. The plot was well developed as well. Laugh-out-loud funny, you can’t help but get swept along with the characters. The touch of romance was well placed, and the use of the writer’s imagination was totally unlimited, and perfect.

I’ll definitely be getting the second and third books in the series.

Morrigan’s Cross by Nora Roberts (‘Circle’ trilogy Book #1)

Morrigan’s Cross

by Nora Roberts

‘Circle’ trilogy Book #1

As a storm rages, the tale of a powerful vampire’s lust for destruction – and of the circle of six charged by the goddess Morrigan to stop her – begins. One of the chosen is a medieval sorcerer whose quest will take him through time – and into the arms of a woman courageous enough to link her destiny to his own.

Review: Holy cow! I swear it’s one of her best and I can’t wait for the second book! Darn, I gotta way a month! I couldn’t put the book down for the life of me! Every time I told myself, finish the chapter and go to bed, something would happen that would cause me to jump and keep going! The characters are genuine, all from different times and eras, and they combine like a team, albeit slowly, but they do. Nora had me laughing, crying, sobbing, smiling, totally pissed and angry… She does it to me every time! That’s what I love about her. The right combination of action, love, and the feeling of family is just the right combination, with a little hint of what’s in store for the circle of six. I could almost swear, it doesn’t get any better than this, but having read all of her books, I usually have to swallow my words. The way she uses her words, you feel like you’re right there, on the sidelines, looking in, and you feel everything, from awe, confusion, happiness, sadness, angry, despair, hopelessness… everything. That’s why, in my book, she’s the best all around.

The Divine Circle of Ladies Making Mischief

by Dolores Stewart Riccio

‘Circle’ series Book #3

In this third novel, The Circle of Five investigates an “angel of death,” whom they suspect of murdering patients at a local rehabilitation center. Between forays into crime-fighting, they also befriend a runaway wife, learn about Druids from the new family in town, and settle an environmental score with a polluted pig farm. Despite all that’s going on in their crusading lives, Cass and Joe Ulysses set the date for a Yule wedding.

Review: Finished Thursday, October 19th, 2006. Wonderful book! The story comes back to the Circle of Five, and I adored it as much as the first two! A lot of laughs, sniffles, panic and outrage when reading this book. You get so into the characters, you can’t help it. You may learn who the ‘bad guy’ is, thanks to Cass, but it’s getting to the end and how it all goes down that keeps you reading. The plot is subtle, and has an easy flow, and your own heart-rate kicks up at the climax of the story. I know mine did! The ending was perfect and sweet. Couldn’t ask for better!
