The Spellman Files (Spellman, #1) by Lisa Lutz

Published January 27th 2009 by Pocket, Mass Market Paperback, 470 pages, ISBN-13: 9781416594178

Meet Isabel “Izzy” Spellman, twenty-eight-year-old private investigator with relentlessly intrusive bosses (Mom and Dad), a chronically perfect lawyer brother (often under duress), and uncle who randomly disappears on benders (“Lost Weekends”), and a kid sister on her trail (hired by her parents to ascertain the identity of her new boyfriend). When Izzy snaps, the only way out of the family business is to solve an ice-cold missing persons case that leads to the disappearance of someone she loves…

Review: Offbeat and quirky, a book you can’t pass up!

Isabel Spellman grew up purposely being the complete opposite of her “absolutely perfect in every way” older brother. So she did the only thing that came naturally: Rebelled in every way, shape and form. Constantly getting into trouble. It didn’t help having private investigators for parents who taught their children the business early. Isabel used those skills to land herself in all that trouble.

They spy and blackmail each other as much as they spy for their clients. But Izzy’s patience is tested when her parents assign her fourteen-year-old sister the job of spying on her for the purpose of identifying Izzy’s boyfriend. Things go from bad to worse, Izzy has had it, and decides to quit. So, her parents persuade her to take one last case – the dead-cold missings persons case. Negotiations ensue, and Izzy is to work the case for 2 months, whether she solves it or not, and she’ll be able to leave without any hounding from her parents.

But as Izzy’s suspicions grow, with facts in the case that just don’t add up, Albert and Olivia do everything in their power to stop Isabel’s pursuit. But Izzy’s doggedly determined to find out what happened to Andrew Snow, no matter what.

And just when Izzy believes she has a break in the case, her sister, Rae, goes missing. Question is: Does Rae’s disappearance have anything to do with the Snow case?

**Worthwhile read, something for everyone.

It’s hard to try and determine which genre to put this book in. The spine specifically says “Fiction”, but it has other genres tied in. There is a case, a mystery that needs solving, but it’s not the basis of the plot.

There is comedy. Between the spying, the dirt, the blackmail, the negotiations, your snorting with laughter at some of the characters antics.

There is a little drama. Not only does little sister Rae go missing, the family does what they can to find her, you feel what Izzy’s feeling. But Uncle Ray needs to be included in that drama. “Lost Weekends” are the norm; Uncle Ray disappears for days on end, drinking, gambling, and bedding women. I cried when Izzy and Rae went to Reno to bring him back the final time, only they weren’t bringing him back the way the family usually did.

Well worth the read! My mistake was reading the excerpt of the next book in the series, Curse of the Spellmans. LOL, now I really want to get my hands on that book!

Murder Game

by Christine Feehan

‘GhostWalkers’ series Book #7

Return to the world of the GhostWalkers with ‘the queen of paranormal romance” (USA Today) as she raises the stakes in the ultimate game of love and death…

Games should be fun, but for two expert teams across the country, they’re murder – because the winning team is the one that gets the most kills. The participants in this violet challenge are rumored to be GhostWalkers. And Kadan Montague isn’t happy about it.

Kadan is a GhostWalker and he’s determined to clear the GhostWalker name of the rumors. To do it, he’s going to need the help of psychic Tansy Meadows. But as soon as he sees her, he knows his mission will be more complicated than he imagined – and the “murder game” may not be all what it seems.

Review: Who do you think wins this game?

Murders are happening along the coasts, and Kadan has been ordered to find out who, why, and stop them. He’s also ordered to keep it under wraps – no one on his team is allowed to know what’s going on. For the murders are suspicious – whoever is doing it, is getting in and out in a flash, no witnesses, no evidence, nothing. They’re being made to look like it’s the GhostWalkers. Someone high up has always wanted them gone. Now they’re being threatened  – a force wants them wiped out, and Kadan refuses to go down without a fight.

There’s only one person he can ask for help, and he needs to find her quick. One of many of Lily’s “sisters”, Tansy is one of enhanced girls. As a child, she’d helped the police and the FBI catch murderers with her enhanced gifts. There’s only one draw-back – the voices of the victims, of the murderers, stay in her head. Whitney had taken away her defenses and she can’t block them. After the last episode, she’d spent a long time in a hospital until she believed her mental stability would allow her to function.

Now, up in the Sierras, she’s working her freelance job, getting pictures for National Geographic. And that’s where Kadan finds her. But when he sees her, his body reacts, instantly. He knows that the enhancing Whitney did included being paired with Tansy, but what he feels is deeper; quickly, to him, Tansy is home. She sees a side of him that not even his closest friends, the other GhostWalkers, have seen.

Together, in their struggle, they track down the murderers and who is running the game. Only, he’s a ‘hunter’, and a ‘dreamwalker’, exactly like Tansy. Stopping him just got a lot more complicated.

And I so loved this book! I don’t think there is one GhostWalker novel that’s left me disappointed. I waited long enough for Kadan’s story. Kadan, who always seemed so cold, distant, ice in his veins.

I can tell you, he met his match with Tansy. She’s a strong woman, determined, like a bulldog who won’t let go once she sinks her teeth into something, no matter the cost to her. Unless it’s sex, she’s not pushover. She stands up to Kadan, like he’s never seen anyone do, and he loves her all the more for it.

I think, though, that I’d like to see the next woman be able to stand up a little stronger, to be able to push back when it comes to the sex. They constantly melt and agree to anything – I’d like to see the tables turned, and for at least one of the woman to be able to resist it.

What I really liked, the best parts, where when I busted a gut laughing at something the characters did or said. Kadan, the man with ice in his veins, was being teased, and I laughed my a** off. When that recording started playing in the car, I burst out laughing even as Tansy did. Listening to the banter between the men… all the while they’re taking out the bad guys, which is supposed to be serious, and the banter between them had me laughing so hard, I had tears! That, IMO, was THE best parts of the book.

Perfect story, plot, characters, ending… the action was superb, the sex scenes tender as much as they are intense, the twists… OMG, the twists! You find out who’s involved in what and it’s actually a shock!

Excellent! And I can’t wait for the next!

Wraith

by Phaedra M. Weldon

‘Zoe Martinique’ series Book #1

First in an excitingly different and new paranormal series. Zo’ Martinique has turned her unusual ability into a career. When she’s traveling, she can’t be seen which makes her an ideal professional snoop. Industrial espionage, surveillance, whatever. But one night things get out of hand while she’s out-of-body. She witnesses a murder and discovers she has unwelcome company: Trench-Coat, a ghostly killer who can see her and hurt her.

Teaming up with a blue-eyed police detective, she tries to solve the case and improve her love life. She also enlists the support of her psychic mother and the ghostly couple who haunt her house. And with murderers, kidnappers, and a desperate ex-porn star involved, Zo’ needs all the help she can get.

Review: I finished this novel on Saturday, July 21st, 2007. An excellent first novel!

I really liked Zoe as a character. I loved her attitude, her personality, the way she sees things, feels emotions. Truly an original character.

The rest of the cast was great as well. Her mom, her ‘assistant’ her friends, and ‘her cute cop.’ Each and everyone an ‘original.’

I thought the plot was great, the twists perfectly placed. The action was smooth, the suspense enough to drive you crazy (good crazy,) and the ‘bad guys’ give you the shivers like you wouldn’t believe. If you like paranormal thrillers, this one is an awesome read! I can’t wait for the second book!

Crave the Night

by Susan Sizemore

‘Primes’ series Books #1, 2, & 3

(“I Burn for You,” “I Thirst for You,” “I Hunger for You”)

In her steamy vampire romances, acclaimed author Susan Sizemore pits vampires against mortals, destiny against desire… By popular demand, all three novels are now availiable in this paperback collectible.

I Burn for You

Battling the dark hollows of his soul, vampire Alec Reynard undergoes secret medical treatments that allow him to bear daylight. Living a double life as a bodyguard, he must also battle his powerful attraction to Domini Lancer, a mere mortal – and, unbelievably, his soul mate. When danger threatens, he kidnaps Domini to protect her but wonders: will she accept the darkness within him – or is she a vampire slayer who’s cleverly infiltrated his clan?

I Thirst for You

Josephine Elliot knows only that the stranger who appears out of the dark desert night and took her captive is named Marcus Cage and that he’s on the run. A vampire, Marcus is overwhelmed by his thirst for Josephine and instanly recognizes her as his soul mate – but when she unwittingly betrays him, both are thrust into mortal danger. Can their newfound love survive or is their insatiable desire doomed?

I Hunger for You

Mia Luchese, who comes from a long line of vampire hunters, doesn’t know that Colin Foxe broke off their blistering affair because he’s a vampire. After she’s attacked by evil vamps and Colin rescues her, their real identities must be revealed for them to get to the bottom of the attack. But even a generations-old enmity that should rip them apart cannot break the bond that has their souls hungering for an eternity of ecstasy in each other’s arms…

Review: Finished July 18th, 2006. Darn it, another series I’m hooked on, LMAO! Susan Sizemore is an awesome writer. Her plots have twists that you didn’t see coming (especially in I Hunger For You,) her characters are colourful, believable and funny. You can feel the ‘sizzle’ between heroes and heroines; her descriptions of characters and places create a vivid picture in your head. Each character had their own thought process, and I loved the ‘inner’ battles. The men were the proper heroes but turned to mush when it came to their women, and the women were fiercely independent, strong and brave … exactly what I ‘crave’ (excuse the pun) in a really good book. I can’t wait for the next installment of the series: Primal Heat, available on July 25th, 2006. Coles says they have 5 in stock… Hmm, wonder if Lorette can sell it to me earlier. I think I’m about to make quick phone call, LOL!

Magic Lost, Trouble Found

by Lisa Shearin

‘Raine Benares’ series Book #1

A girl with attitude. An all-powerful amulet.

This could only mean trouble.

My name is Raine Benares. I’m a seeker. The people who hire me are usually happy when I find things. But some things are better left unfound…

Raine is a sorceress of moderate powers, from an extended family of smugglers and thieves. With a mix of street smarts and magic spells, she can usually take care of herself. But when her friend Quentin, a hot-quite-reformed thief, steals an amulet from the home of a powerful necromancer, Raine finds herself wrapped up in more trouble than she cares for. She likes attention as much as the next girl, but having an army of militant goblins hunter her down is not her idea of a good time. The amulet they’re after holds limitless power, derived from an ancient, soul-stealing stone. And when Raine takes possession of the item, it takes possession of her.

Now her moderate powers are increasing beyond anything she could imagine – but is the resume enhancement worth her soul?

Review: I finished this novel on Sunday morning, July 8th, 2007. An excellent first novel to a new series!

I thought it was great! As a first book, you meet the characters – all of them. The ones to adore, the ones to hate… Raine is an excellent female character. Brave, strong, does what she has to despite how she feels about doing it. I can’t wait to see what she gets herself into next.

The secondary characters all tie in with her in some way, and I like the diversity of them, whether friend, family, or a really hot guy. And I can’t wait to read more about them!

I loved the setting. Shearin uses her imagination to the max, creating a whole new world with really great characters, good and bad. The good ones made you sigh, the bad ones gave you the creeps. And the surroundings are described so perfectly that you wouldn’t know this place doesn’t exist. The action is superb. The plot was beautifully orchestrated, making the novel damn near ‘unputdownable!’ Different in style, no complete romance but just a hint of, leaving you wanting more… *sigh!*

Can’t wait for Book #2, Armed and Magical!

A Quick Bite by Lynsay Sands (‘Argeneau’ series Book #1)

Avon

Format: Trade Paperback - Published: October 6, 2005 - 374 Pages - ISBN: 0060773758 - Published By: Avon

A Quick Bite

by Lynsay Sands

‘Argeneau’ series Book #1

“That hot guy ties to Lissianna Argeneau’s bed? He’s not dessert – he’s the main course!”

Lynsay Sands is bringing her hilarious voice and popular vampire series to Avon and we’ve got a new star on the rise!

A haemaphobic vampire?

You guessed it. And her mother wants nothing more than to cure this nasty fear of blood so her darling daughter can have a normal meal for once. What better way than to give her a darling doctor on a plate – or tied to a bed – for feeing? But instead of simply having a delicious snack, this vampire vixen decides the doctor is too tasty for just one bite, and before they know it he’s got a hot (but cold-blooded) woman on his hands who wants much more than to just sink her teeth into him…

Lynsay comes to us with an established track record. She may be new to Avon, but she brings with her an already-established series, the Argeneau vampire series, that has a strong steady fan base that’s clamoring for the next installment.

Vampire comedy is hot and on the way up and with Lynsay Sands we have one of the pioneers of the mini-genre, and the best of the best!

Review: Read in 2007. *giggle* I thought this was a great book!

I thought the vampire aspect, the way Sands wrote it, was definitely original. I’d never heard it explained like that and I thought it was a great twist.

The characters seemed real, especially the family part of it. LOL, I could see my dad’s side of the family doing just what the Argeneau family does.

I thought Lissi was a great character. Strong in her own right, she has a head on her shoulders, and I’m equally glad that she fell in love with ‘the doctor’ as much as he did with her. They match each other equally in brains and tastes.

And I won’t ruin it by giving any spoilers. But I do have a question to get you wondering… Does Lissi really get over her phobia? Read it to find out, LOL!

Fanged & Fabulous

by Michelle Rowen

‘Immortality Bites’ series Book #2

My name is Sarah Dearly, and I’ve got major problems. Last month, I was turned into a vampire by the world’s worst blind date. Then I may have, totally by accident, started a war between the mostly peaceful bloodsuckers and a bunch of sociopathic vamp hunters who have nicknamed me the Slayer of Slayers. Now I’m being used as bait to draw out the hunters’ bad-ass leader, while my gorgeous 600-year-old boyfriend Thierry seems to be blowing me off, and my sizzle-hot, fanged friend Quinn is trying to turn my self-defense lessons into make-out sessions. So you know what? I’m done. I’ve had it. There comes a time when a vamp has to just suck it up and go after what she wants. And as soon as I figure out what that is, that’s exactly what I’ll do…

Review: I finished this novel on Sunday, July 22nd, 2007. LOL, a great second book!

I laughed as much while reading this one as I did the first one. Most of the characters are the same as the first, with the exception of a few added ‘bad guys’. I thought the plot played out well.

Moments of action that were as funny as well as holding your breath, a few moments of tears, a few of anger, and one of ‘oh, how sweet’ and ‘aaaah’.

Can’t wait or the third book!

Bitten & Smitten

by Michelle Rowen

‘Immortality Bites’ series Book #1

There’s a new vamp in town…

Dear Mom,

I might be a wee bit late for Cousin Missy’s wedding. It’s been a tough week. Turns out, my blind date from hell was literally from hell. Guy bit me. Next thing I know, I’m being chanced all over the city by vampire hunters. And did I mention that I got fired, too?

Bright side – I met a man. Thierry de Bennicoeur. How great is that name? Anyway, he’s sexy, six-hundred years old, and a tad suicidal, but no one’s perfect, right? And we have a deal – he’s gonna show me the ropes of the vampire world, and I’m supposed to help him end his existence. Or maybe I’ll just try to convince him life is worth living – no small challenge with the mostly immortal, let me tell you. I’ll admit it’s a complicated relationship. But with any luck, I just might have a date for that wedding after all…

Hugs and Kisses,

Sarah

Review: I finished this novel on Tuesday, July 17th, 2007. As the first in a new series, I loved it!

It was funny, quirky. Sarah is a great character; I loved her sense of humor, and how she reacts to everything.

Thierry … *sigh* what I wouldn’t do to meet a man like that. Dark, mysterious, a vampire unlike those I’ve read before.

Quinn … I felt bad for him, but I’m glad he’s finally coming to grips with what’s what.

The entire cast had me laugh and groan with all their quirks. I can’t wait to read the next one, Fanged & Fabulous.

Date Me, Baby, One More Time

by Stephanie Rowe

‘Immortality Sexy’ series Book #1

IF YOU THINK LIFE IS COMPLICATED, TRY IMMORTALITY.

Justine Bennett is cursing her life. She’s the Guardian of the Goblet of Eternal Youth, she hasn’t left the house in ages, and it’s been over 200 years since she’s had sex. Oh, and the Goblet has shaped shifted into an espresso machine. Not exactly the stuff grand destiny is  made of…

Derek LaValle is worried. Due to a family curse, he’ll be dead in the space of a week unless he finds the Guardian of the Goblet of Eternal Youth and beheads her. Which wouldn’t be a problem if she wasn’t so sexy, smart … and ready to behead him right back.

Review: I finished this book on Monday, May 21st, 2007. As the first book in the series, I thought it was awesome.

The characters, I thought, are developed well, and all different from each other. The plot was well developed as well. Laugh-out-loud funny, you can’t help but get swept along with the characters. The touch of romance was well placed, and the use of the writer’s imagination was totally unlimited, and perfect.

I’ll definitely be getting the second and third books in the series.

Valley of Silence

by Nora Roberts

‘Circle’ trilogy Book #3

Having traveled through the Dance of the Gods to the land of Geall, the circle finds themselves convincing then training the people of Geall to defeat Lilith’s vampire army. The Valley of Silence is a forbidding place for the battle of all battles, but the circle continues to prepare through magic and a few of early stakeouts that tests their strength individually and as a team. Moira finds herself playing the roles of warrior and royal, as she follows the tradition of her people and prepares to take the crown before leading them into battle. And if that isn’t enough, she finds her thoughts turning to Cian more often than not. So what’s a chaste and intelligent young woman to do when given less than a month with the man she loves, who’s not a man, but a vampire? And how will the people of Geall fare against an army of blood-thirsty vampires who have had centuries to prepare?

Review: Finished Saturday, November 4th, 2006. (At, like, 4am, LOL!) OMG!!!!! I sooooo didn’t want this trilogy to end! Nora did it to me … again! I swear, she is THE master story-teller. Should some say differently, hey – go ahead and say so … not like I’ll listen, LOL!

The end of the Circle trilogy couldn’t have been better. The action was great, the conflicts deep and personal. Moira, for everything that she is, couldn’t have been a better person. Cian, though a vamp, couldn’t have been any more perfect. Nora did an excellent job showing her readers exactly who they wre, including their vulnerabilities, and their love. And, as usual, her descriptions bring you right to the front line, watching it all, you can’t help but get wrapped up in it! I got angry, I got right pissed, I got scared and anxious for the six, and balled my ehad off at the ending, first with tears and sobs of sadness, like my heart was going to split in two for the characters, then with joy so bright, I jumped around the living room… (Uh, I’m not kidding, I actually did both! :D . And emptied a box of Kleenex in doing so!) No way could it have gotten any better. Even if you’re not into the whole witch, sorcerer, vamp, shape-shifter thing… You gotta read this series. It will change your mind, I guarantee it!
