The Spellman Files (Spellman, #1) by Lisa Lutz

Published January 27th 2009 by Pocket, Mass Market Paperback, 470 pages, ISBN-13: 9781416594178

Meet Isabel “Izzy” Spellman, twenty-eight-year-old private investigator with relentlessly intrusive bosses (Mom and Dad), a chronically perfect lawyer brother (often under duress), and uncle who randomly disappears on benders (“Lost Weekends”), and a kid sister on her trail (hired by her parents to ascertain the identity of her new boyfriend). When Izzy snaps, the only way out of the family business is to solve an ice-cold missing persons case that leads to the disappearance of someone she loves…

Review: Offbeat and quirky, a book you can’t pass up!

Isabel Spellman grew up purposely being the complete opposite of her “absolutely perfect in every way” older brother. So she did the only thing that came naturally: Rebelled in every way, shape and form. Constantly getting into trouble. It didn’t help having private investigators for parents who taught their children the business early. Isabel used those skills to land herself in all that trouble.

They spy and blackmail each other as much as they spy for their clients. But Izzy’s patience is tested when her parents assign her fourteen-year-old sister the job of spying on her for the purpose of identifying Izzy’s boyfriend. Things go from bad to worse, Izzy has had it, and decides to quit. So, her parents persuade her to take one last case – the dead-cold missings persons case. Negotiations ensue, and Izzy is to work the case for 2 months, whether she solves it or not, and she’ll be able to leave without any hounding from her parents.

But as Izzy’s suspicions grow, with facts in the case that just don’t add up, Albert and Olivia do everything in their power to stop Isabel’s pursuit. But Izzy’s doggedly determined to find out what happened to Andrew Snow, no matter what.

And just when Izzy believes she has a break in the case, her sister, Rae, goes missing. Question is: Does Rae’s disappearance have anything to do with the Snow case?

**Worthwhile read, something for everyone.

It’s hard to try and determine which genre to put this book in. The spine specifically says “Fiction”, but it has other genres tied in. There is a case, a mystery that needs solving, but it’s not the basis of the plot.

There is comedy. Between the spying, the dirt, the blackmail, the negotiations, your snorting with laughter at some of the characters antics.

There is a little drama. Not only does little sister Rae go missing, the family does what they can to find her, you feel what Izzy’s feeling. But Uncle Ray needs to be included in that drama. “Lost Weekends” are the norm; Uncle Ray disappears for days on end, drinking, gambling, and bedding women. I cried when Izzy and Rae went to Reno to bring him back the final time, only they weren’t bringing him back the way the family usually did.

Well worth the read! My mistake was reading the excerpt of the next book in the series, Curse of the Spellmans. LOL, now I really want to get my hands on that book!

A Quick Bite by Lynsay Sands (‘Argeneau’ series Book #1)

A Quick Bite

by Lynsay Sands

‘Argeneau’ series Book #1

“That hot guy ties to Lissianna Argeneau’s bed? He’s not dessert – he’s the main course!”

Lynsay Sands is bringing her hilarious voice and popular vampire series to Avon and we’ve got a new star on the rise!

A haemaphobic vampire?

You guessed it. And her mother wants nothing more than to cure this nasty fear of blood so her darling daughter can have a normal meal for once. What better way than to give her a darling doctor on a plate – or tied to a bed – for feeing? But instead of simply having a delicious snack, this vampire vixen decides the doctor is too tasty for just one bite, and before they know it he’s got a hot (but cold-blooded) woman on his hands who wants much more than to just sink her teeth into him…

Lynsay comes to us with an established track record. She may be new to Avon, but she brings with her an already-established series, the Argeneau vampire series, that has a strong steady fan base that’s clamoring for the next installment.

Vampire comedy is hot and on the way up and with Lynsay Sands we have one of the pioneers of the mini-genre, and the best of the best!

Review: Read in 2007. *giggle* I thought this was a great book!

I thought the vampire aspect, the way Sands wrote it, was definitely original. I’d never heard it explained like that and I thought it was a great twist.

The characters seemed real, especially the family part of it. LOL, I could see my dad’s side of the family doing just what the Argeneau family does.

I thought Lissi was a great character. Strong in her own right, she has a head on her shoulders, and I’m equally glad that she fell in love with ‘the doctor’ as much as he did with her. They match each other equally in brains and tastes.

And I won’t ruin it by giving any spoilers. But I do have a question to get you wondering… Does Lissi really get over her phobia? Read it to find out, LOL!

Fanged & Fabulous

by Michelle Rowen

‘Immortality Bites’ series Book #2

My name is Sarah Dearly, and I’ve got major problems. Last month, I was turned into a vampire by the world’s worst blind date. Then I may have, totally by accident, started a war between the mostly peaceful bloodsuckers and a bunch of sociopathic vamp hunters who have nicknamed me the Slayer of Slayers. Now I’m being used as bait to draw out the hunters’ bad-ass leader, while my gorgeous 600-year-old boyfriend Thierry seems to be blowing me off, and my sizzle-hot, fanged friend Quinn is trying to turn my self-defense lessons into make-out sessions. So you know what? I’m done. I’ve had it. There comes a time when a vamp has to just suck it up and go after what she wants. And as soon as I figure out what that is, that’s exactly what I’ll do…

Review: I finished this novel on Sunday, July 22nd, 2007. LOL, a great second book!

I laughed as much while reading this one as I did the first one. Most of the characters are the same as the first, with the exception of a few added ‘bad guys’. I thought the plot played out well.

Moments of action that were as funny as well as holding your breath, a few moments of tears, a few of anger, and one of ‘oh, how sweet’ and ‘aaaah’.

Can’t wait or the third book!

Motor Mouth

by Janet Evanovich

‘Barnaby’ series Book #2

Miami is still freakin’ humid. The nights are even hotter. And there’s a body on ice. And that’s just the beginning of this adrenaline-rush of a hot-wired ride from phenomenal number one New York Times bestselling author Janet Evanovich

A woman with a taste for speed and a talent for breaking the rules, Barney also knows a little too much about cheating. First there was Hooker and that salesclerk. How she’s convinced one of the competitors is up to no good on the track. Snooping to find evidence, Hooker and Barney “borrow” a NASCAR hauler. Turns out, the hauler is carrying two race cars and a dead guy. It looks like Barney and Hooker are facing multiple counts of grand theft auto and homicide.

So buckle up as Barney, Hooker,a 150-pound bundle of Saint Bernard love named Beans, and the Super Cigar Ladies Felicia and Rose shift into gear on a while race around South Florida and Concord, North Carolina.

Everything you always wanted to know about righteous indignation, stealing and eighteen-wheeler, and sex is in the fast lane.

Review: Just as funny as the first one. Mostly the same characters, a few new ones added in, including a bunch of guys you wouldn’t want to be around. I thought the plot twists were great, and I laughed so hard sometimes, I had to put the book down.

In a way, even the second of this series reminds me of Evanovich’s ‘Plum’ series. Mostly I think it’s the situations that Barney finds herself in. You want to laugh, this is an excellent book to do just that. An easy and great read!

Metro Girl

by Janet Evanovich

‘Barnaby’ series Book #1

Buckle your seat belts. Number one New York Times bestselling author, Janet Evanovich, is moving into the fast lane with Metro Girl, a thrilling, high-octane misadventure with high stakes, hot nights, cold-blooded murder, a woman with a chassis built for speed, and one very good, very sexy NASCAR driver who’s along for the ride.

“Wild” Bill Barnaby’s dropped off the face of the earth and big sister Alex heads for Miami, Bill’s last known sighting, on a harrowing hunt to save her brother … and maybe the world. Truth is, Alex has been bailing her brother out of trouble since they were kids. Not that Bill’s a bad sort. More that he acts first and thinks later. Unfortunately, this time around, Wild Bill will be Dead Bill if Alex doesn’t find him in time.

Alex blasts through the bars of South Beach and points her search to Key West and Cuba, laying waste to Miami hit men, dodging Palmetto bugs big enough to eat her alive, and putting the pedal to the metal with NASCAR driver Sam Hooker.

Engaged in a deadly race, Wild Bill’s “borrowed” Hooker’s sixty-five foot Hatteras and sailed off into the sunset … just when Hooker has plans for the boat. Hooker figures he’ll attach himself to Alex and maybe run into Bill. Maybe Hooker can salvage what’s left of his vacation. And maybe Hooker’ll get lucky in love with Bill’s sweetie pie sister. After all, Hooker is NASCAR Guy. And NASCAR Guy is good at revving a woman’s engine.

The race to the finish is hot and hard, taking Alex and Hooker into international waters, exposing a plot to grab Cuban gold and a sinister relic of the Cuban missile crises.

Creative cussing and sexual innuendo included.

Review: I finished this novel on Friday, July 20th, 2007. I thought it was a great first novel in the series!

I thought the characters were fun and quirky, the ‘bad guys’ as well. I liked the action, the suspense, the twists. The last line in the synopsis; definitely lots of creative cussing and a whole lot of sexual innuendos. Some that made you laugh, some that made you groan with a ‘you’ve got to be kidding me’ feeling. Reminded me somewhat of her Stephanie Plum series. A fun read!

Twelve Sharp

by Janet Evanovich

‘Stephanie Plum’ series Book #12

“Welcome to Trenton, New Jersey, where bounty hunter Stephanie Plum’s life is about to implode in Janet Evanovich’s wildest, hottest novel yet!”

FIRST A STRANGER APPEARS

While chasing down the usual cast of miscreants and weirdos, Stephanie discovers that a crazed woman is stalking her.

THEN THE STRANGER REVEALS HER SECRETS

The woman dresses in black, carries a 9mm Glock, and has a bad attitude and a mysterious connection to dark and dangerous Carlos Manoso … strett name, Ranger.

NEXT, SOMEBODY DIES

The action turns deadly serious, and Stephanie goes from hunting skips to hunting a murderer.

SOON, THE CHASE IS ON

Ranger needs Stephanie for more reasons than he can say. And now, the two are working together to find a killer, rescue a missing child, and stop a lunatic from raising the body count. When Stephanie Plum and Ranger get too close for comfort, vice cop Joe Morelli (her on-again, off-again boyfriend) steps in. Will the ticking clock stop at the stroke of twelve … or will a stranger in the wind find a way to stop Stephanie Plum … forever?

Review: I finished this novel on Monday, July 2nd, 2007. As part of the series, another awesome book.

Stephanie is great main character. Strong without wanting to be, brave when she doesn’t feel it, she deals wiht everything the only way she knows how. And you can’t stop laughing!

The heat between her and Ranger is still there – as well as with Joe. Who would you pick? Cause I can’t choose either, LOL!

The plot was excellent, each scene its own but blends in with the rest. So much laughter, and Evanovich knows how to write it so you get a clear picture of it all, making it even funnier.

I can’t get enough of this series. I hope it’s around for a long time!

Hard Eight

by Janet Evanovich

‘Stephanie Plum’ series Book #8

“Hard Up”

Fugitive Apprehension Agent Stephanie Plum has a big problem on her hands: Seven-year-old Annie Soder and her mother, Evelyn, have disappeard. Evelyn’s estranged husband, Steven, a shady owner of a seedy bar, is not at all happy. Finding a kidnapped child is not an assignment for a bounty hunter. But Evelyn’s grandmother lives next door to Stephanie’s parents, so Stephanie follows the trail left by Annie and Evelyn – and finds a lot more than she bargained for.

“Hard Risk”

Steven Soder is somehow linked with a very scary Eddie Abruzzi. Trenton cop and on-again, off-again fiance Joe Morelli and Stephanie’s mentor and tormentor, Ranger, warn Stephanie about Abruzzi, but it’s Abruzzi’s eyes and mannerisms that frighten Stephanie most. Stephanie needs Ranger’s savvy and expertise, and she’s willing to accept his help to find Annie even thought it might mean getting too involved with Ranger. Stephanie, Ranger, Lula (who’s not going to missing riding with Ranger,) and Evelyn’s lawyer/Laundromat manager set out to find Annie. The search turns out to be a race among Stephanie’s posse, the True Blue Bonds’ agent – a Rangerette known as Jeanne Ellen Burrows – and the Abruzzi crew. Plus, there’s a killer rabbit on the loose!

“Hard Eight”

Strap on your helmet and get ready for the ride of your life! Hard Eight. The world of Stephanie Plum has never been wilder.

Review: Read June 29th, 2006. Why-oh-why didn’t Janet go into a little more detail about Steph’s ‘escapade’ with Rangre? Dammit, I wanted more info than that! LOL! That’s okay. He’s still just as hot as ever. I enjoyed the story, but it still seems strange, the situation between Joe and Steph. Why is it that he can’t accept wholely who Steph is and what she does for a living? Would he feel the same if she was a cop? If you ask me, the attitude is a selfish one, and he’s really starting to piss me off. Wonder what the next story will bring. I adore this series, and thank everyone who turned me onto it. THANK YOU!!!

Seven Up

by Janet Evanovich

‘Stephanie Plum’ series Book #7

The #1 bestselling, nationwide phenomenon continues with Janet Evanovich’s most explosive Stephanie Plum thriller yet – so get ready for the ride of your life!

Semi-retired mob buy, Eddie DeChooch, is caught trafficking contraband cigarettes through Trenton, New Jersey. When DeChooch fails to show for a court appearance, bond enforcement agent Stephanie Plum is assigned the task of finding DeChooch and dragging his decrepit ass back to jail. Not such an easy job, it turns out, since DeChooch has learned a lot of tricks over the years and isn’t afraid to use his gun. He’s already shot Loretta Ricci and left her for worm food in his shed. He wouldn’t mind shooting Stephanie next.

Especially since Steph has discovered that likeable losers (and former high school classmates) Mooner and Dougie have inadvertently become involved with DeChooch. They’ve gotten sucked into an operation which is much more than simple cigarette smuggling and holds risks far greater than anyone would have imagined.

When Dougie disappears, Steph goes into search mode. When Mooner disappears, she calls in the heavy artillery and asks master bounty hunter Ranger for help. His price for the job? One night with Stephanie, dusk to dawn. Not information she’d want to share with her some-time live-in roommate, vice cop Joe Morelli.

A typical dilemma in the world of Plum.

And on the homefront, Stephanie’s “perfect” sister Valerie has decided to move back to Trenton, bringing her two kids from hell. Grandma Mazur is asking questions about being a lesbian, and Bob, the bulimic dog, is eating everything in sight – including the furniture.

Mud wrestling, motorcycles, fast cars, fast food, and fast men. It’s SEVEN UP. Absolutely Janet Evanovich at her very best.

Review: Read June 25th, 2006. The more I read it, the more I cracked up! Joyce gets what she deserves. Way to go, Bob, LOL! Ranger is as hot as ever, Grandma Mazur is at it again, and I was royally pissed when Joe gave Stephanie an ultimatum. S.O.B.!!! Boy, was I mad! Should have heard the Italian swears coming out of me with that one! But I was most pleasantly surprised by Stephanie’s mom. Good for her. The ending had me jumping up from my chair (if you read it, you’ll understand what I mean when I say Holy Hell!!!) Does she really do what I think she’s about to do? Can’t wait to read Hard Eight!

Hot Six

by Janet Evanovich

‘Stephanie Plum’ series Book #6

Bounty hunter Stephanie Plum and Trenton vice cop Joe Morelli join forces to find the madman killer who shot and barbecued the youngest son of international black-market arms dealer Alexander Ramos.

Carlos Manoso, street name Ranger, is caught on video just minutes before the crime occurs. He’s at the scene, he’s with the victim, and he’s the number-one suspect. Ranger is former special forces turned soldier of fortune. He has a blue-chip stock portfolio and no known address. He moves in mysterious circles. He’s Stephanie’s mentor – the man who taught her everything she knows about fugitive apprehension. And he’s “more” than her friend. Now he’s the hunted and Stephanie’s the hunter, and it’s time for her to test her skills against the master. But if she does catch him … what then? Can she bring herself to turn him in?

Plus there are other things keeping Stephanie awake at night. Her maternal grandmother has set up housekeeping in Stephanie’s apartment, a homicidal maniac has selected Stephanie as his next victim, her love life is in the toilet, she’s adopted a dog with an eating disorder, and she can’t button the top snap of her Levi’s.

Experience the world of Plum – in Janet Evanovich’s new thriller. It’s surreal, it’s frenetic, it’s incendiary. “Hot Six.” It’s the best yet.

Review: Read June 24th, 2006. For those of us who follow the series, I was pleasantly surprised to find out she’d called Joe. No matter how much they ‘infuriate’ each other, they’re perfect for each other. I really like this series. It has its own little intrigue, enough action to spare, and the characters are colourful and hilarious. I definitely recommend this series to everyone!

High Five

by Janet Evanovich

‘Stephanie Plum’ series Book #5

Bail jumping in Trenton is down to small potatoes. Stephanie’s only open case is a small bond for a small violation, commited by a small person who raises Stephanie’s frustration leven in big ways. So short of money and long on bills, Stephanie comes up with a plan – diversify! Signing on as an intern with entrepreneurial Super Bounty Hunter Ranger, Stephanie ventures into Ranger’s mostly morally correct and marginally legal operations.

None of this makes vice cop Joe Morelli a happy man. The cop in him can’t help but wonder as to the source of Stephanie’s expensive new cars. And the rest of him, the man who’s been friend and lover to Stephanie, can’t help but wonder if there’s more to the partnership than meets the eye.

The internship is downgraded to second priority when Uncle Fred goes missing. Even though Grandma Mazur is sure he was abducted by aliens, Stephanie sets out to look for Fred. He’s a perfectly average senior citizen, and he’s disappeared without a trace while running errands. He’s left his ten-year-old Pontiac station wagon locked up nice and neat in the Grand Union parking lot, the cleaning is carefully arranged on the back seat, and his wife is at home, waiting for him to return with the bread and the milk and the olive loaf bologna. Locked in the top drawer of his desk are photos of a body, dismembered and stuffed into a garbage bag. And locked away in the computer files of a another average citizen are the clues that will lead Stephanie to Fred.

Review: Read June 22nd, 2006. I can’t get enough of this series! I’m surprised at how Stephanie, even though she’s only a fictional character, can stay sane between her ‘job’ and her family. I can’t imagine what my life would be like if I had someone like Grandma Mazur as part of my family. Joe’s comment ticked me off, and Ranger … oh, there’s a man I’d love to get my hands on. I don’t know how Janet does it, but you really feel for Stephanie. You can feel her panic, her indecision, her confusion … she’s definitely and original character. Can’t wait for the next book! ‘High five’ to Janet Evanovichand her own style of writing
